A single hollow-beam optical trap for cold atoms

We present an optical trap for atoms which we have developed for precision spectroscopy measurements. Cold atoms are captured in a dark region of space inside a blue-detuned hollow laser beam formed by an axicon. We analyse the light potential in a ray optics picture and experimentally demonstrate trapping of laser-cooled metastable xenon atoms.

Theory of an optical dipole trap for cold atoms

The theory of an atom dipole trap composed of a focused, far red-detuned, trapping laser beam, and a pair of red-detuned, counterpropagating, cooling beams is developed for the simplest realistic multilevel dipole interaction scheme based on a model of a ~315!-level atom. The description of atomic motion in the trap is based on the quantum kinetic equations for the atomic density matrix and the...

Background-free fluorescence detection of cold atoms in a two-color magneto-optical trap.

A two-color magneto-optical trap (MOT) for trapping cesium (Cs) atoms is experimentally realized. This two-color MOT employs the radiation forces due to photon scattering from the Cs 6P(3/2) F' = 5 - 8S(1/2) F" = 4 excited-state transition, which replaced one pair of the three pairs of cooling/trapping laser beams operating on a single-photon red detuning to the Cs 6S(1/2) F = 4 - 6P(3/2) F' = ...

Two Cold Atoms in a Harmonic Trap 1

Two ultracold atoms moving in a trap interact weakly at a very short distance. This interaction can be modeled by a properly regularized contact potential. We solve the corresponding time{independent Schrr odinger equation under the assumption of a parabolic, spherically symmetric trapping potential.

Switching of light with light using cold atoms inside a hollow optical fiber

We demonstrate a fiber-optical switch that operates with a few hundred pho-tons per switching pulse. The light-light interaction is mediated by laser-cooled atoms. The required strong interaction between atoms and light is achieved by simultaneously confining photons and atoms inside the microscopic hollow core of a single-mode photonic-crystal fiber.
